CSAS AND CHALLENGES FACING FARMERS OF COLOR
Farmers of color in the United States continue to endure systemic racism within the food system that causes significant and consistent social, economic, and political harm. Farmers of color often have less access to markets, fewer beneficial relationships, and fewer financial resources and opportunities. This all results in higher rates of debt, lower agricultural land ownership rates, and fewer farmers of color who are able to keep their farms.
RAFI-USA's Come to the Table program has created the Farm and Faith Partnerships Project, to counteract injustices in the food system which marginalize farmers of color and rural communities of color by creating mutually beneficial and self-sustaining economic partnerships between farmers of color and faith groups in their communities. These relationships result in farmers of color gaining additional sources of income and increased access to new local markets, and rural faith community members, and other community members, gaining increased food security and access to fresh, healthy foods. For example, read here about our Wake County CSA pilot project.
