The Mission of the Immaculate Conception Social Justice Committee is to engage and develop Immaculate Conception parishioners as servant-leaders empowered to live lives of justice, healing, compassion and peace manifesting the Reign of God in Durham through formation in Catholic Social Teaching, direct service to "the least among us," advocacy, community organizing and global solidarity.

Crop Walk
Choose either to help organize IC's participation in the Durham area CROP Walk, help at our Rest Stop on Duke's East Campus, or be a walker with pledge support. Time Commitment: About 4 hours on the day of the walk (helping to recruit pledges after Sunday Masses is about 30 minutes/Sunday).

Duke Cancer Patient Support
Be a compassionate presence for cancer patients (& family) and help to make their visit (diagnosis, treatment, and after-care) less stressful. Answer non-medical related questions. Time Commitment: Participants choose daY (Mon.-Fri.), AM or PM, 4 hours a week

Food Drives
Support and organize food drives for agencies that serve the needy and transport food to local pantries. Time Commitment: 2 hours per month

Habitat for Humanity
As a hands-on volunteer, work side by side with the new home owner and help them to accomplish the dream of home ownership, pride and self-esteem. Time Commitment: a few hours on a Saturday morning when house is under construction

Interfaith Hospitality Network
Provide emergency housing and meals for homeless families at local Durham churches. Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network is a not-for-profit, non-denominational association of 30+ Durham area congregations which uses church volunteers and facilities to feed and provide shelter for homeless families. Its mission is to address the needs of homeless families by mobilizing churches, synagogues, and people of faith to move toward residential stability. Time commitment: prepare and serve dinner, or spend the night at a church, once every ten weeks

Los Padres Latinos (Latina Mothers' Playgroup)
The Latina Mothers' Playgroups serve Spanish-speaking mothers with children ages 0-3yrs. Each group meets once a week for 1½ hours for fellowship, music, sharing ideas, developing nurturing parenting skills, information sharing and providing referrals to community resources.

Meals for the Homeless
Join in either preparing and/or serving one meal a month to our hungry and homeless sisters and brothers at the Community Kitchen of Urban Ministries of Durham. Time Commitment: About one hour per month.

Prison Ministry
Help those incarcerated to discover forgiveness, reconciliation and God's love through visits, letters, prayers, advocating, etc.

Spanish Tax Preparation
Help members of the Latino community prepare state and federal income tax documents. Half-day training and translators provided. Work one Saturday or several. Time Commitment: a few hours on Saturday mornings from Feb. 1st through April 15th.

Advocacy

Bread for the World (Pan para el Mundo)
Bread for the World helps Christians translate the Gospel call for justice into effective policies on hunger/poverty issues through prayer, study, and action. Time Commitment: Local group meets monthly for 1 hour to write letters to national legislators.

Ecumenical Advocacy Days
This is an annual interdenominational training and advocacy program in Washington, D.C. Receive two days of legislative advocacy training in tracks including Global Security, Africa, Asia, Eco-justice, Domestic, Latin America, Immigration, Middle East and Jubilee and Economic Justice. Then on Monday meet with our North Carolina Senators and local Representatives to put your advocacy skills into practice. Time Commitment: Four days in March

Respect Life
This ministry seeks to foster understanding of and action around a spectrum of issues related to respect for human life. This ministry upholds a consistent ethic of life that is concerned for the unborn and their mothers, the terminally ill, the disabled, refugees, all victims of violence and abuse and promoting an end to the death penalty. Religious Coalition for a Non-Violent Durham
Founded in 1992, the mission of the Religious Coalition is to act to prevent and rectify the injustice of violence in Durham. Activities include public prayer vigils to honor and publicly recognize the dignity and worth of homicide victims, to comfort family and friends and to sanctify and bring healing to the site where the violence occurred, a Reconciliation and Reentry Ministry connecting men and women returning from prison with a congregational faith team, monthly community lunches and roundtable discussions and the Hands Without Guns art education project. Global Solidarity

Advent Alternative Gift Fair
This gift fair focuses on the education concerning global labor and economic conditions and provides an opportunity for parishioers to support fair trade. Time Commitment: Once a year event: organization of weekend fair, held after each Sunday Mass in early December.

Bridges of Hope
Our mission is to raise awareness of the plight of Christians in the Holy Land, provide educational scholarships to Palestinian children through the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation and support advocacy for a just and peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East. Environmental Stewardship
This group supports parish activities that acknowlege the fragility and preciousness of God's creation, and incorporates this awareness into all aspects of the community life including: liturgy, Faith Formation, Immaculata School, building facilities, and stewardship. Keepers of the Earth

Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities is a private, nonprofit social service agency serving the people of eastern North Carolina. For over 100 years, we have continued a rich tradition of providing a wide range of services. All programs are available to individuals and families regardless of race, creed, or ability to pay through seven regional offices. The mission of Catholic Charities is to assist the parishes, communities and Diocese of Raleigh in accomplishing the social mission of the church. Clean Energy Durham
Clean Energy Durham is a non-profit organization that promotes and encourages energy savings, neighborhood by neighborhood. We do this by:
- creating effective and replicable neighborhood organizations to encourage and assist Durham households in saving energy;
- measuring and monitoring results;
- partnering with other local organizations and businesses to increase investment in local energy: saving and renewable energy projects; and

Love Fund Agencies and Recipients
Established in the 1980s as a special weekly collection at Immaculate Conception, this ministry provides support to individuals and families who need a "helping hand up" simply to get by. Families in need of assistance for a variety of reasons are recommended to us by local social service agencies.

Established in 1975, Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. delivers hot, nutritious meals to Durham County residents who are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. Since its inception, Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. has served more than one and a half million meals through the generous help and support of its staff, volunteers, donors, and sponsors.

North Carolina Interfaith Power and Light is an interfaith ministry devoted to deepening the connection between ecology and faith. We work with faith communities to address the causes and consequences of global climate change through education and public advocacy. Our Children's Place
Our Children's Place is a residential initiative allowing young children (babies and preschoolers) to live with their mothers while the women serve out their sentences for nonviolent offenses. It is designed to break the intergenerational cycle of crime, poverty, substance abuse, and family violence and empower the child with the help of his/her mother to enhance his/her cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development.

Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF)
Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. YO: Durham
YO: Durham (Year of Opportunity for Durham Teens) is the newest initiative of Durham Congregations in Action. Based on a successful Boston, MA program, the program annually will serve 30-40 students for a 52-week period. The YO: Durham program includes a paid six-week Summer Career Academy, team mentoring for the entire year, and a paid job internship during the school year. Its goals are an increased rate of high school graduation, increased enrollment in post-secondary education, increased workplace preparedness and a decrease in the number of students appearing in the criminal justice system.
