Director of Children’s Programs

(Primarily Director of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program)
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham, NC seeks a Director of Children’s programs (primarily Director of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program).

Our community:
We are a multi-cultural Franciscan parish in the Diocese of Raleigh NC with the majority being Spanish speakers. We sponsor a non-profit Catholic school, Immaculata. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is the primary model of faith formation for children ages 3 through 5th grade in the parish and in Immaculata School, serving a combined 800 children each week. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has been active in our parish since 1991.
Faith Formation for Children and Youth at Immaculate Conception is administered by a team including a full-time Youth Minister, a bi-lingual Office Administrator and a bi-lingual coordinator for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The parish program is primarily served by volunteer catechists. Catechists who serve in Immaculata School are paid Immaculata employees who are guided by the Director of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

​Job Description:
The position of Director/Mentor will be full-time, with salary to be negotiated commensurate with experience. The position includes health and retirement benefits as offered by the Diocese of Raleigh. The position required the director to work many nights and weekends, and to be physically able to arrange environments, climb stairs, and sometimes carry objects weighing over 20 lbs. Good computer/word processing and publishing skills are a must.

The Director will be responsible for:
  • Ensuring a high quality of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program is implemented in both the parish and in Immaculata School; and will work closely with the leadership team of both to further the parish mission and vision.
  • Mentoring and supervising catechists (volunteer and paid) , and support staff, including oversight of CGS/Montessori methodology and curriculum.
  • Composing communications for parents of children in the program and in the parish (newsletters, web-site communications, etc.)
  • Coordinating Catechist Formation events as needed for the various Levels of formation; including budgeting of expenses and income connected to formation.
  • Serving as a catechist for children in various levels in the program sessions each week during the catechetical year.
  • Oversight of Sacramental Preparation.
  • Partnering with the various ministries of the parish, and with the diocese and other parishes in our area to represent Catechesis of the Good Shepherd as needed throughout the year.
  • Oversees Children’s Liturgy of the Word.
  • Collaborates with other staff for Vacation Bible School.

​The ideal Candidate will have:
  • Master’s degree in theology, or related ministerial subject (such as Pastoral Studies)
  • Deep understanding of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and the Montessori approach
  • Certification for all three levels of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or a willingness to pursue such
  • Experience in administration of volunteer programs, recruitment of volunteers, and the ability to work with catechists in a collaborative and forward-thinking manner.
  • Strong managerial, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • The ability to work with the larger parish staff in visioning and maintaining an active collaborative role in the mission of the parish
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (preferably able to speak/read and write Spanish)
  • A strong desire to affect a multi-cultural environment for Faith Formation in the community at large, and in the CGS program particularly
  • Be a practicing Catholic
