LOCATING A DETAINEE

Detention Information
  • North Carolina does not have a long-term ICE detention facility in the state. The Alamance County Jail, which used to be used for long term detention, is currently only being used for short periods of custody (under 72 hours) if applicable standards are met.
  • Most detainees from NC are sent to the Stewart Detention Facility in Lumpkin, GA.​​

Locating a Detainee
  • It typically takes about 48 hours for ICE to process a new detainee in their system.
  • Families can try using the online ICE detainee locator to find their loved ones, but calling the detention center directly typically yields the best results.

REPORTING CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

Regardless of immigration status, all people in the United States have guaranteed rights under the Constitution.
​

If you believe your rights were violated by law enforcement agents you should:
  • Write down everything you remember, including officers’ badges and patrol car numbers, which agency the officers were from, and any other details. Get contact information for witnesses.
  • If injured, seek medical attention immediately and take photographs of injuries.
  • File a written complaint with the agency’s internal affairs division or civilian complaint board. In most cases, complaints can be filed anonymously.
  • Information on filing a complaint against ICE agents can be found here.​
Si cree que sus derechos fueron violados por agentes encargados de hacer cumplir la ley:

The ACLU of North Carolina might be able to help if an individuals’ constitutional rights were violated. Impacted people can fill out our legal intake form to notify the ACLU of NC of your case. Please note that submitting an intake does not guarantee that an ACLU attorney will be able to take your case.
