Please join us the weekend before Valentine's Day, February 7-8th, as Immaculate Conception's Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) will once again team up with Bull City Fair Trade for our Valentine's Day Fair Trade Chocolate Sale in the gathering space after all our masses! Our Hispanic Young Adults Ministry (El Sembrador) will be leading this event for our parish community.

Our Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) helps Immaculate Conception parishioners embody Catholic Social Teaching and the Gospel commitment to justice, including Fair Trade. Purchasing fair trade chocolate for yourself, friends, and loved ones during our Valentine's Day Fair Trade Chocolate Sale is one small way to show your support. It "helps farmers and workers to be justly compensated, improves the safety of their working conditions, and prohibits the use of forced labor and child labor. These purchases also empower fair trade-certified farmers to lift themselves out of poverty and build sustainable businesses that help their community’s stability in a democratic fashion."

Bull City Fair Trade, previously known as One World Market, began in 1991 in the basement of Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, NC. Bull City Fair Trade is part of a worldwide movement that is striving to improve the livelihood of disadvantaged people in developing countries through the expansion of fair trade.

Fair trade is an ethical, environmentally conscious, sustainable business approach rooted in dialogue, respect, and transparency. It is a set of principles that focuses on opportunities for disadvantaged artisans and farmers living in developing countries. Fair trade is not charity, but a long-term system that seeks justice in the international trading system.
The gifts that are available for purchase through Bull City Fair Trade have been made by organizations that assure that the dignity of the worker, artisan, or farmer who produced them is paid a fair wage for their labor. Items include fair trade coffee, chocolate, and handmade art pieces. Yet, fair trade is much more than a fair price!

Fair Trade can empower the poorest of the poor by providing a holistic approach to trade and development that aims to alter the ways in which commerce is conducted. Fair Trade Organizations seek to create sustainable and positive change in developing and developed countries.

Democratically organized farmer groups receive a guaranteed minimum floor price and an additional premium for certified organic products. |
FAIR LABOR CONDITIONS
Workers on fair trade farms enjoy freedom of association, safe working conditions, and living wages. Forced child labor is strictly prohibited. |
DEMOCRATIC AND TRANSPARENT ORGANIZATIONS
Fair trade farmers and farm workers decide democratically how to invest Fair Trade revenues. |

DIRECT TRADE
With fair trade, importers purchase from fair trade producer groups as directly as possible, eliminating unnecessary middlemen and empowering farmers to develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace. |
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Harmful agrochemicals and GMOs are strictly prohibited in favor of environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect farmers’ health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations. |
COMMUNITY DEVELOMENT
Fair trade farmers and farm workers invest fair trade premiums in social and business development projects like scholarship programs, quality improvement trainings, and organic certification. |

Thank you to everyone who helped support this year’s Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Valentine's Day Fair Trade Chocolate Sale. We are particularly grateful for the efforts of our Hispanic Young Adults Ministry (PJH El Sembrador) for helping our JPIC lead this event for our parish community again this year.

For the third year in a row, your continued generosity has led to the highest sales level recorded in the history of our parish ($4,912.25)! These sales support fair trade-certified farmers and workers, living wages and just compensation, safer working conditions, and reduce forced labor and child labor. 10% of these proceeds are donated back to our JPIC so we can continue to serve our parish community.

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our parishioners, for the second year in row sales for our Valentine's Day Fair Trade Chocolate Sale were the highest level recorded in the history of our parish, breaking yet another JPIC RECORD! “Bull City Fair Trade” sales totaled $3,517.59! Once again, this year, 10% of their proceeds ($352) has been donated back to our JPIC budget so we can continue to serve our parish community.

The JPIC would like to thank all our parishioners for supporting our “Valentine's Day Fair Trade Chocolate Sale” again!
Despite the cold and rainy weather, your amazing generosity led us to break yet another JPIC RECORD this year as our parish continues to embody the Gospel’s call to work for justice in the world! “Bull City Fair Trade” sales totaled $3,250, with 50% more chocolate being sold this year than Immaculate Conception’s best previous record!
10% of their proceeds will be donated back to our JPIC budget so we can continue to serve our parish community. Thank you to Bull City Fair Trade and all our parishioner volunteers for making this event possible. |
