News from Growing thru Grief
Each week, Growing thru Grief offers small group support and education to those grieving the loss of a loved one—and twice a year, we hold a six week “Introduction to Grief” series. This year our spring series will be led by Betsy Barton, and will start on March 11. Here is the full schedule from now through the series:
Betsy Barton is the Senior Associate for Community Engagement and Learning at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. She plans and conducts interactive education on a variety of topics for clinical and community audiences. As a result of her personal experiences with loss, she is a firm believer in grief counseling and peer support.
Previously, she worked at the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life, the Duke Health Inequalities Program, and on Duke research teams related to serious illness, caregiver stress, medical decision-making, and race-based differences regarding decision-making at the end of life. She received her Master of Public Health degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1990.
Growing thru Grief meets at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1200 W. Cornwallis, each Tuesday from 4 to 6 pm. We are a coalition of religious and civic organizations to offer support and education to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. All are welcome.
- February 25 “Grief Humor: The Healing Power of Laughter,” with Eloise Jordan
- March 4 “Everything Happens for a Reason,” with Mandy Murphy
- March 11 “Meeting Our Grief,” with Betsy Barton. After the numbness wears off, we are left with our loss. Do we befriend it? Confront it? Resist it? Or all three, in turn?
- March 18 “A New Reality,” with Betsy Barton. We grieve, we mourn…and somehow the sun still rises and sets every day. After losing someone we love, how do we adapt to our new situation?
- March 25 “Getting the Support WE Need,” with Betsy Barton. Many people offer us advice, their experiences, herbal remedies—you name it. But how do we focus on ourselves and get the support that will work for us?
- April 1 “Who Am I Now?” with Betsy Barton. Stones transform after time in a rock tumbler—and so do we, as we go through the upending process of getting the rug swept out from under our feet after a loss. We’ll talk today about being open to new discoveries.
- April 8 “Remembering Our Loved Ones,” with Betsy Barton. Even though our loved one is not at the breakfast table, or on the other end of the phone line, they are still with us in some way. We’ll talk in this session about how we keep their memory alive in our hearts.
- April 15 “Unexpected Blessings,” with Betsy Barton. Blessings, really? But perhaps some hidden surprises await.
