IC’s Promoting Human Dignity (PHD) team extends an invitation to explore and reflect on our Christian calling to respond to what has become known as the school-to-prison pipeline, defined as a system of policies and practices that push students, especially students of color, out of school and into the juvenile and adult criminal systems. For background, check out this report from NC Child.
Over the next several months there will be opportunities to learn together and act.
During Lent the PHD team will host a virtual book study that challenges us to Lent’s call of repentance and forgiveness. Crimson Letters: Voices from Death Row by local author Tessie Castillo shares personal essays that illuminate the complex combination of choice and circumstance that brought four men on Death Row at Raleigh Central Prison, and the cycle of dehumanization and brutality that continues inside prison. At times the men write with humor, at times with despair, at times with deep sensitivity, but always with keen insight and understanding of the common human experience that binds us.
Two options for the Lenten book study are available:
1. Tuesday evenings (via zoom) on 3/8, 3/15, 3/22 and 3/29 from 7-8:30 pm
2. Friday mornings (via zoom) on 3/4, 3/11, 3/18 and 3/25 from 10-11:30 am
Please register here by February 26 if you are interested in participating. Books are available at the parish center for $20; scholarships available.
Parishioners are also invited to consider writing letters to prisoners as part of their Lenten journey. Guidance and support will be provided. We hope to collect and deliver letters in time for the Easter season of resurrection and new life. Stay tuned for more information.
Later this year, additional offerings in the school-to-prison pipeline learning series may include conversations with student leaders in Durham Public Schools, partnership with young adults transitioning out of foster care, a film series and additional book studies. Keep checking the newsletter for more information and ways to get involved.
